greenhorn

greenhorn
Originally a reference to a young animal with new horns, but applied to a person with the meaning ‘simpleton’, or in American slang, ‘rookie’, since the end of the seventeenth century. Vocative use is more frequent in the USA than in Britain. The Natural, by Bernard Malamud, has: ‘“Pitch it, greenhorn,” warned the Whammer.’ In Moviola, by Garson Kanin, it is supposedly Thomas Edison, discussing a business deal with a young and inexperienced negotiator, who says: ‘No, no, you greenhorn. Sixty you, forty us.’
